Ganesh Visarjan at Foreshore Estate

All roads led by Foreshore Estate with idols of Lord Ganesha in

different hue and size for immersion to conclude the Vinayakar

Chathurthi celebrations in Mylapore and its neighborhood.

Ganesh Visarjan is celebrated on the 14th day of Shukla Paksha

in the month of Bhadrapada. In 2024, it was on Sept 17, which

is also Chaturdashi. The festival marks the end of the 10-day

Ganesh Utsav and symbolizes the life-death cycle

It is believed that Lord Ganesha returns to his celestial abode

on Mount Kailash to be reunited with his parents, Lord Shiva

and Goddess Parvati

The idols are immersed in water as a ritual so that they break

down into the clay from which they were made. Discarding or

breaking the idols is considered disrespectful.

In Chennai, the immersion spots include Foreshore Estate,

Srinivasapuram and Palkalai Nagar. There are some rituals

involved with the immersion ceremony that include waking up

early, bathing, cleaning the home and puja area, inviting friends

and relatives, preparing special dishes and sweets, lighting a

diya, applying tilak and kumkum, and offering laddus and

modaks.

The Mylapore District Police especially the E5 Pattinapakkam

Police Station led by Inspector Vijayakumari had made

elaborate bandobust for public safety.
