S Ve Shekher stresses Brahmins unity

Former Mylapore MLA, veteran stage and movie actor S Ve Shekher addressed
Mylaporeans on the subject “Future of Brahmins in Tamil Nadu” at MFAC
Auditorium last week.
In his address he traced the history of Brahmins and their contribution to various
fields and nation development and being born as a Brahmin is not our choice.
There are over 45 lakhs Brahmins in Tamil Nadu and if united they could decide
the politics of Tamil Nadu.
There were hardly any MLAs or MPs from Brahmin community.” As Mylapore
MLA I fought for the dignity of crematorium workers and made them as
government employees. Brahmins are above caste, creed or community,” he said.
As an actor who had staged over 7,000 plays all over the world for the past 30
years and propagated blood donation and eye donation some 50 years ago when
they were not in vogue, he said he had donated blood over 50 times and
performed mass burial of unclaimed bodies. “We do not discriminate people.”
Stressing the speedy implementation of 10 percent reservation to Economically
Weaker sections he said there was a wrong notion that it only benefits
Brahmins.”Not all Brahmins are highly educated or well off. There is a class of
Brahmins called Savundi Brahmins who live on penury leading hand to mouth
existence and they need support. Brahmins in certain professions such as
archakas, priests, cooks, purohit helpers earn less and suffer economically. We
had been denied all our rights for the past 75 years and discriminated.”
Arguing for forming a separate political party for Brahmins, he said it’s not
something strange in Tamil Nadu where every caste has a political outfit.
Brahmins should come out and vote in large numbers to decide their future than
remaining indoors and watch TV on polling day, he said.
